One of the most important events in the world of technology is the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas every year at the beginning of January. This year the CES will take place between January 7th and 10th.

At this point, we would like to tell you about the exciting trends in 3D printing that can be found at this year’s CES.

Medical 3D printing applications

The first thing that catches the eye is that the biggest hype can still be observed in the field of medical 3D printing. For example, an additively manufactured vertebra would be used to prepare for complex interventions. 3D printing makes it possible to produce a patient-specific model on which the surgeons involved can prepare for the procedure.

Facial care through 3D printing

A notable focus of 3D printing applications at CES 2020 is also the area of cosmetic face care.

In this context, the South Korean AmorePacific Corporation is presenting a system for 3D printed face masks. “IOPE Tailored 3D Mask” was developed in cooperation with the Korean 3D printing company Lincsolution. Specifically, this is a further development of the “Tailored 3D Mask” that was launched in 2017. This skin care product is controlled by a smartphone app. This app measures the user’s face and creates a skin diagnosis. The information obtained in this way is now sent to a special 3D printer. This creates the hydrogel face mask.

An electric car from the 3D printer

With the “Metrosnap”, an electric car celebrated its premiere at the CES on January 7, 2020. The special thing about this vehicle: More than 30 of its interior and exterior parts were produced using 3D printing, i.e. using the FDM or PolyJet process. The “Metrosnap” was designed by the Swiss company Rinspeed.

New 3D printers

Of course, the CES is also exactly the right place to present new 3D printers. The Taiwanese manufacturer XYZPrinting is presenting its newly developed full-color 3D printer, the Da Vinci Color 5D. The special thing about this device: It is a combination of FFF/FDM and inkjet printer. The Vinci Color 5D can therefore print both 3D models and 2D paper. In addition, this 3D printer can not only print on paper, but can also apply CYMK ink to an ink-absorbing PLA material. In this way, 3D models can be designed in multiple colors.
