3D Activation Managing Director gives an interview about 3D printing to the well-known fashion magazine

Because of numerous outstanding projects in 3D printing, our managing director of 3D Activation GmbH received a remarkable honor from a prominent fashion magazine in spring 2014. On the occasion of the 3D printing orders from the Wiesbaden 3D printing service provider for the fashion label Marc Cainfor the well-known Essen shoe manufacturer dikemanas well as for the young Munich designer Pia Hinze (each from 2013) Strohschein was interviewed for TM-Magazine, issue no. 05/2014 (April 2014).

The focus of the TM interview with Strohschein was the potential and need of 3D printing technology for fashion and design projects, but also the question of possible downsides and limiting factors of fashion 3D printing.

“There is a huge need to implement fashion and design projects with the help of 3D printing,” says Strohschein optimistically in view of the successfully completed orders. On the one hand, he sees the reason that 3D printing technology offers start-up companies and design newcomers in particular the opportunity to produce concise individual combinations without having to consider a minimum quantity purchase. “The processing of 2 textiles with different properties – that is an outlook that can decisively change fashion in the future,” says Strohschein with certainty.

3D printing allows customized clothing

On the other hand, 3D printing allows Clothing individually and precisely fitting to produce, which meets the needs of many fashion consumers very much. “The 3D printing process meets the consumer’s desire for individual production,” says Strohschein.

Despite all the euphoria, Strohschein does not believe that 3D printing will revolutionize the fashion industry on a large scale, since the acquisition and application costs for this are far too high. According to Strohschein, there is also no need to fear the possible downsides of 3D printing technology for fashion production, such as deflation or job cuts in this industry.

Several award-winning projects in 3D printing

For the fashion label Marc Cain GmbH (from Bodelshausen, near Tübingen), 3D Activation printed a 3D printed skirt consisting of 1320 partly movable elements, which was then assembled from 12 individual parts after the actual 3D printing process. Both 3D Activation itself and Marc Cain received the silver prize for this 3D printed rock at the Printstars 2014 in Stuttgart (Liederhalle, September 18th, 2014) in the category “3D printed products”, which was awarded for the first time.

Pia Hinze had 3D Activation (under the name MUTED) 3D print a 2500cm³ dress in 8 individual parts, which were then assembled and covered with a layer of gold.

The young Czech designer Lenka Markova commissioned parts of a 3D printed shoe she had designed, 3D Activation, which earned her one of 5 prizes in the Deichmann competition, which the Essen-based shoe group organized in 2013 on the occasion of its 100th anniversary. Each was printed in polyamide (PA) using selective laser sintering.
