The history of 3D printing
It has been some time since Gutenberg printed his first book in the 14th century. Since then, the printing industry has changed a lot and is still changing. Who would have imagined a few years ago that jewelry would come out of the printer with the finest workmanship and high-quality materials?
Researchers have been working for a long time to develop a printing process that enables 3D objects to be printed.
The three most important developments for today’s 3D printing were the following:
1986: The American Chuck Hull laid the foundation for 3D printing. He developed the stereolithography process that hardens liquids under UV light.
1989: Another important step was the development of FDM printing, by Scott Crump. This process is also known as melt stratification. It is based on the principle of melting and reshaping. The individual layers of the 3D object are applied from top to bottom using a CAD data model. However, the quality here is rather questionable, and it is used more for private purposes.
1994: The third important technology for 3D printing is selective laser sintering, also known as SLS printing. This pressure is based on selective melting and reshaping of plastics using a laser beam. Here, PA plastics, physical 3D models, are created by locally fusing individual layers of powder.

2015: . One of the latest processes was only developed in 2015, which enables 3D printing from gold. This is of course a huge step forward in the field of jewelry printing! Thanks to the new droplet process, jewelry can now be printed with even more precision. This works in such a way that, through the use of pulsed lasers, small droplets can be detached from the metal film. This allows the very high melting temperature of gold to be reached.
2009: One of the most recent 3D printing processes is polyjet printing. This involves working with liquid plastic, which is applied in very thin layers with several nozzles and hardens immediately.

Initially, 3D printing was only used in a few industrial productions, such as the automotive and aerospace industries. But after the patent for FDM 3D printing expired, it could also be used much more cost-effectively. Today, 3D printing is used in many industries.
