What can we expect in 2019 in the world of 3D printing
Once again we start into a new year, which is usually associated with numerous hopes and expectations. As far as developments in the 3D printing sector are concerned, many insiders are also looking forward to the new year with tense expectations.
We have therefore compiled for you the 5 most important trends that we expect for 2019 in the world of 3D printing.
1.Merge of 3D printing and AI
It has long been accepted that artificial intelligence (AI) will fundamentally change our lives in the foreseeable future. And so it shouldn’t really come as a surprise that the use of AI should also have an impact on the use of 3D printing.
In concrete terms, this means above all that AI will facilitate the process of 3D design. But the printing process itself can also be further improved with AI, in that errors can be detected and corrected more quickly.
2. More polymer-based 3D printing materials
While in 2018 metals were the trend in 3D printing, it is expected for 2019 that more 3D printable polymer compounds will come onto the market. For example, BASF made major investments in research and development of 3D printing materials made of polymer compounds during 2018.
3. Increasing importance of 3D printing in the automotive sector
The trend towards increased use of 3D printing in automotive sector expected to continue in 2019. It is possible that the first fully 3D-printed car will be on the road before the end of 2019.
4. More 3D printing for medical purposes
3D printing technologies have been used for medical purposes for some time (we reported). In 2019, a step into a new era of medical 3D printing could succeed: the so-called bioprint, i.e. the production of entire organs on a 3D printer could finally become a reality in 2019. So maybe we can soon expect a kidney or even a heart from the 3D printer. Especially in times of a shortage of donor organs, 3D printing could save lives.
5. Improved software
Improved design software will come to market that will further increase the efficiency of 3D printing and 3D design. Cloud-based solutions could play an important role here. Experts also assume that the trend will be even stronger than before, away from proprietary and towards compatible open source solutions.
