Pekka Salokannel is a Finnish designer based in Helsinki. His training in industrial design has led him to focus on 3D printing for the past 7 years.
He did his first modeling job for Tinkercad and is now a self-employed entrepreneur for his two companies Kokosom & Fabrigate.
“When I draw for 3D printing, I am always torn between two approaches: the idea that the shape of the object must very simply adapt to the function it will have which is opposed to freedom and the extreme complexity in the design that 3D printing allows. I imagine that this fight between simplicity and complexity will remain etched in my mind forever! “
Pekka Salokannel is inspired by his native country
When asked where his inspiration comes from, he hesitates because “it varies enormously” according to him. But he still has two main sources of inspiration intimately linked to his native country.
“At best, my inspiration comes from nature. This is what happened with my Shroom-clock lamp, the idea came to me at the end of the summer while I was collecting mushrooms. The sauna is also a very inspiring place, it is a calm and meditative place that encourages creation. “
In terms of 3D modeling, he has a very clearly stopped operating mode and a real preference for Rhino. As in terms of 3D printer, he opted for the Ultimaker 2.
“I mainly use Rhino, but for simpler designs I sometimes use Tinkercad because the iterations are faster there. I also rarely use Sculptris and SketchUp. “
“In my studio I have an Ultimaker 2 that I use mainly with PLA (220 °) and with Cura’s default settings. I really like printing with Colorfabb wood filament (205 ° & 0.27mm layer height), I love the texture of the printed wood objects. “
To the question about his favorite creation, he has an excellent answer, linked to the use of the object!
“I would say that my best creation is the glasses that I wear every day. These are glasses 3D printed using the SLS technique, I wear them all the time, so I imagine they are crucial in my design technique! “
