3D Printing Characters: Youtuber Garret Kearney

Garret Kearney

Garret Kearney is a 3D printing enthusiast and successful YouTuber on whose channel he regularly showcases his 3D creations. He is known for the exceptional quality of his numerous creations, all of which have a superb hand-painted finish.

“I make new designs every week, my wife does the color and then I post a video showing the whole creative process. Of course, my 3D files can be downloaded and shared over the internet for free.”

When asked about his source of inspiration, Garret Kearney says that his childhood memories, his passion for video games and Japanimation were instrumental in the creation of his objects:

“I really appreciate the artistic side of 3D modeling and 3D printing. My main motivation is to improve my own skills to be able to create very detailed 3D characters. My inspiration mostly comes from video games and anime. I hope one day to be able to model very complex models like those from Dragon Ball Z and Final Fantasy.”

The 3D modeling software used reflects its evolution. After reaching the limits of two softwares, Garret sets out to master the third software!

“First I started with Tinkercad. Then, when I reached the limits of this program, I switched to Fusion360. I like the mix between 3D modeling and the ability to include 2D drawings. This allows me to create my complex models. But I’m starting to feel like I’ve reached the limits of Fusion360, so I’ve started modeling some characters with ZBrush.”

Garret Kearney owns two 3D printers that have similar configurations. He uses a Robo3D R1 that he bought in 2014 and a recently purchased Da Vinci 1.0 Pro from XYZprinting:

“I use pretty similar print settings on both machines and I mostly print with PLA. I usually opt for a layer thickness of 0.3 mm for large models or models that do not require a high level of detail. For smaller and more detailed prints, I use a layer height of 0.1mm. With regard to the infill, I usually opt for a 20-30% filling. If the model requires it, I also activate Supporter and Raft (which was mostly the case with my objects).”

When asked what his favorite creation is, Kearney has to think for a long time. He has created over 80 models since the beginning. His choice finally falls on several models:

“My main creations are Kirby, Bob-omb and Myrapla. These figures do not require any support material and are very easy to print. I mostly print them to test new print settings, 3D printers or filaments. I also love the Wall-E robot, but unfortunately it’s not fully functional.”
