Every 3D print starts with a file containing the design as a digital 3D model. While there are some websites such as Thingiverse that provide thousands of files for members of the 3D printing community to download, it is also possible to design your own 3D models tailored to the specific needs of the user. The best known and most used method for 3D modeling is computer-aided design (CAD). There are both free and paid websites that can be used to design your own 3D models. One software is ZBrush, which came onto the market in 1999 and was developed by Pixologic.
Unlike other more well-known CAD software packages on the market, such as Sketchup , FreeCAD or 3D Builder, ZBrush was developed for 3D printing enthusiasts and anyone who wants to create ultra-realistic 3D printed sculptures. According to users of the software, the platform allows the creation of models with very fine details, making the additively manufactured parts look hyper-realistic. This makes ZBrush the popular software for artists who use 3D printing for their creations. Among other things, Californian design studio Aaron Sims uses Creative to print the infamous Stranger Things creature Demogorgon. And they’re not the only ones. Designer Eddie Christian used ZBrush to reproduce the famous Joker mask.
ZBrush modeling tool
The platform has several tools that allow users to create models with more than realistic details. For example, with Sculptis Pro it is possible to create your own sculptures by adding or removing material. If you want to create models that resemble human or animal shapes, you’ll need to use the Zsphere tool to add a skeletal shape to the material. The CAD software developed by Pixologic offers users a large catalog of models to help them achieve the best possible result. Zbrush can process models with more than 20 million polygons.
Several versions are available for those considering purchasing the design software. As you can imagine, these differ not only in the features they offer, but above all in price. The most expensive version is available at a price of 790 euros (with a lifetime license), has tools such as UVs and render passes and is particularly suitable for professionals. Then there is the Zbrush Core version, which costs 159 euros and is intended for modeling lovers. Finally, there is a completely free option for beginners, Zbrush Core Mini. However, the range of functions is very limited.
